Amazon’s gen AI is doing a shoddy job rewriting noncompliant listings [MDSR #29]

eCommerce may be the only thing holding up retail sales, but working in this space isn’t without its risks. Even with the mysterious disappearance of ratings in search results, new 2024 peak season requirements — and Amazon’s gen AI doing a shoddy job rewriting noncompliant listings, which sellers didn’t even consent to. Not to mention, the FTC fake review crackdown coming this fall. 

The reality is that Amazon (and its many sellers) have a firm grip on consumer wallet share. The latest data shows that Prime Day drove the most loyalty among the spate of summer sales events, with 84% of bargain-hunters only buying from Amazon despite plenty of discounts from competing retailers. 

And now Amazon’s gotten into bed with TikTok for another groundbreaking social shopping partnership, not only giving sellers a valuable social shopping channel — but also unlocking data sharing between the two platforms, potentially leading to better ad targeting and personalized product recs. 

In other advertising news, every major retailer is still expected to become a full blown ad platform by 2030, and now YouTube is taking on TikTok Shop with an expanded Shopify partnership. But it’s TikTok-first ad campaigns that are rumored to redefine ROI — as long as the creative avoids big budget production value and prioritizes volume, speed and relevance.  

Worth noting is that today’s consumers are full of contradictions. All that volume, speed, and relevance might be the reason why TikTok’s very own 2024 shopping trend report found that consumers want brands to stop bombarding them with marketing offers, and why more young shoppers are turning to Pinterest to find brands. 

It’s a similarly contradictory story for AI. Consumer aversion to it is becoming a problem for advertisers, while some consumer research paints ChatGPT as a new favorite tool for online shopping — and for roasting everyone’s Instagram feed
