Amazon coupons are the answer to retargeting woes [MDSR #28]

Hot Off The Presses 📰
Between the summer Olympics, the impending U.S. election — and recently being found responsible for hazardous products sold by third-party sellers — even Amazon is worried about capturing consumer attention (and spend) for the rest of the year.
While mass-merchants are slated to be the #1 shopping destination for the back-to-school frenzy, it’s retailers like Target with physical locations for order pickups and live promotional events that will be the big winners. And with TikTok, Shein, and Temu using clever customer engagement tactics to win more market share, Amazon’s marketplace isn’t exactly the breath of fresh air it once was.
Not exactly what those of us with businesses deeply intertwined with Amazon want to hear — but their ever-changing fee structure has many sellers running for the hills, anyway.
Reading between the lines? It’s safe to say Amazon is well-cushioned for any type of blow as they continue to pull ahead of rivals in major product categories, setting new records for delivery logistics (and promising not to penalize sellers affected by the CrowdStrike outage) along the way.
As far as how the extended eCommerce universe is fairing? Pinterest is seeking publisher partnerships to boost ad sales as ad spend slowed down across most platforms in the second quarter. Walmart’s low price promise is currently under a microscope after Amazon’s warning.
And Google has certainly seen better days as they dominate headlines for things like an antitrust ruling that could change the entire internet — and for downplaying the data privacy ramifications of their recent reporting glitch.
Plus with Google’s sudden cookie reversal announcement, Amazon stands to grab a bigger slice of their advertising pie… Not that retailers can easily identify site visitors, anyway.
